What is Aquaponics?

Fish farming uniquely compliments hydroponics by adding value while removing the necessity of adding nutrients to a traditional hydroponic cycle.

Why Aquaponics?

Advantages:

  • Fish provide the nutrients for plants
  • Hydroponic component serves as a bio-filter
  • Greatly reduced water consumption per kg of produced plant
  • Profit potential from selling fish and Produce
  • Reduction in land use for growing beds

Disadvantages:

  • Requires constant electricity when site prevents a solar solution
  • Water quality monitoring (especially in the beginning stages of the cycle)
  • Limited freedom in selecting plants

What to expect…

– A system has a 1 to 2 year ramp up period to reach full production values as fish grow to full size and bacteria establishes itself in the system.
– Once system is in full maturity fish will grow from fingerling to harvest size in 9 months.
– Some crops, such as lettuce, can be harvested in as little as 32 days, while crops such as strawberry’s can take up to 7 months.
